Lunar Space Resources Value Chain Worksop

Tuesday, 20. May, 2025

Workshop lead by

  • Francesco Liucci, Innovation Management Officer (Serco for ESA)
  • Stefania Pandolfi, Strategy and Programme Benefits Analyst (ATG for ESA)

Length 2h 30mins.

Short description

The workshop will focus on mapping the entities and their interactions along the Lunar Space Resources Value Chain in collaborative effort led by the presenters and involving all participants.

Longer description

The workshop will start with the presenters providing an overview of the work led by ESA aiming to create a Business and Financial Modelling for the Lunar Space Resources Value Chain with reference to the related Call that at the time of the event will be closed and possibly have already some researchers awarded (see the Call here).

Then the presenters will outline the aim of the workshop: collect insights from workshop’s participants on all parts of the Value Chain:

    1. Stages
    2. Key technologies
    3. Type of activities
    4. Type of entities
    5. Interactions among entities
    6. Future Scenarios

The presenters will start this exercise by drawing (or having a picture stuck on one of the flipcharts) a simple definition of Stages of the Value Chain as the one below:

According to the number of participants, the presenters will either split them into smaller groups (3 to 5 people) or have them all together to take part in providing views and insights on the first 5 topics of the 6 presented above. The presenters will guide the exercise by asking questions and by taking notes on the different flipcharts.

The exercise will end with the results of the collaborative insights being summarised on a large sheet of paper by the presenters and stuck such paper on the wall or other surface available.

The last part of the exercise will be dedicated to scenario building: based on the value chain created the participants will be asked to provide insights on major events to occur in the Value Chain in 3 different timeframes (5 years – 10 years – 20 years). The presenters will guide the exercise by asking questions and by taking notes on the large sheet of paper on the wall.

After the workshop the presenters will commit to share the results of the workshop with all participants.
